Shorebirds for Beginners – Guided Walk

We know that shorebird species, or wading birds can be a difficult group of birds to tell apart. Our rangers Katherine, Richard and Ben want to help you to tell your dunlin from your redshank!
Perhaps you have recently developed an interest in wildlife or perhaps you know your garden birds and you’re interested in shorebirds but don’t know who to ask. What’s the little white one with the fast legs, the black and white bird with the orange bill and which is making that haunting call?

On these two hour guided walks we’ll do some steady walking with plenty of stopping to watch the wildlife we encounter on the way. We’ll also talk you through some of the common species, their life cycle and the challenges that they face. Plus, because this is nature you never know what could show up, a peregrine on the hunt, a rare migrant bird or a skein of migrating geese.

We regularly hold walks starting from Boulmer (Beach Car Park), Newbiggin (Church Point Car Park) and Warkworth (Warkworth Beach Car Park). So look out for a walk that would suit you.

  • Places are limited so please book your place on the walk using the form below.
  • Walking along uneven ground will be undertaken during the session. Waterproofs, warm clothing and boots are recommended.
  • If you have your binoculars do bring them along, however some optical equipment will also be available to share.
  • Dogs on leads are very welcome to attend these walks.
  • Please note that in the case of extreme weather conditions, events may be postponed. We will directly contact those booked onto the events should this occur.

Upcoming Dates

Newbiggin Guided Walk - Saturday 20th April, 2024 10:00am

Join us for a two-hour guided walk along the shore at East Sea Sands – an incredibly special site for a large variety of different shorebird species.

We will meet at 10am outside Newbiggin Maritime Centre, who have kindly provided hot drinks vouchers for after the walk. From there we will head along the shore towards Beacon Point, taking our time to watch the wildlife we se along the way. By this time spring migration will be well underway, so we never know what exciting things we might see!

No prior knowledge is required, and during the event we will discuss why Newbiggin is so important for shorebirds, as well as talk you though some of the common wader species and give tips on how to identify them. Please use the form below to book your place.
